Such was Section 1.

Its morality frayed ragged and its veneer of righteousness worn dangerously thin.

When had it stopped worrying about missions and turned in on itself - on its own political problems. ...When had its own civil war become more important than the peace of the world?

As for that war, the battles continued to be fought to and fro, nobody knowing whose side they were on from one day to the next ... who were the good guys and who were the baddies? Was there a difference anyway?

Allegiances formed and broken over a cup of tea, a symbol of civilised discussion, masking vicious intent. Orders for cancellation tossed backwards and forwards like so many meaningless memos.

The casualties of this descent into mayhem included personalities, relationships and continuity. Nobody behaved the same from one day to the next and no one cared any more ... loose ends lay scattered about the arena of Systems waiting to trip up the latest operative in abeyance.

George was a puppet now. ...or maybe a puppeteer according to the angle from which you observed the battlefield ..... Operations and Madeline allies or enemies depending on which way the wind was blowing... The certainties of the recent years become like quicksand beneath the feet...

In the midst of the confusion stood the two lovers, at the heart of the storm, backs to one another ...either in defence of their partner or in defiance...who could tell?
