"Soul Survivor"
(Written from LFN "Nikita's" P.O.V.)
I was a soccer ball
On the playground-
Kicked into a corner
And forgotten.
I was a stuffed carnival bear
In my mother's boyfriend's apartment:
A trophy, a toy;
Fingered, then discarded.
I was a lost kitten
In an alleyway-
Crying in the darkness
For hearth and home.
I was a red-handed heroine,
A survivor from the streets-
And they clasped the metal on my wrists
Instead of pinning a medal to my chest.
Then you came to me-
Dark, eyes full of pain;
Watching, waiting,
Damaged, damned.
The self-condemned man:
No longer believing in pardons,
Redemption in the desert,
Or words with meaning.
What did you see?
We were like angels in that light-
But who was dark
And who was bright?
I saw myself reflected in your eyes-
And our severed souls
Fit together, like twin halves
Of a heart-shaped locket.
You harbor secrets,
I fail to trust,
But something makes sense
Between the two of us.
Defeating the silence and the lies:
I grow, you heal;
You make me understand
And I make you feel.
I breathe in your belief
You exhale my sorrow.
We fit like lock and key-
Trembling, exploring each other's mystery.
