"A Woman Named Lori"

Birkoff walked into the club. He bounced his foot with the beat of the music and smiled. He moved his way over to the bar. It had been a long time since he had been in a bar, or a club. He had seen this place on his way back from another fight with Melissa. Michael and Nikita had not come home yet, and he just left.

Now he found that this club was different. First, there were no really heavy drinkers from what he could tell. Birkoff grabbed a beer and headed out to mingle with others.

Birkoff had a terrible day. First with Walter gone, everyone was running to him, like he had all the answers. Then he tried to talk to Melissa again.

“Birkoff… I just need some time.” Melissa pleaded and Birkoff stood at the door staring at her.

“Melissa.. I was wrong.. Nikita was pregnant.. and I will believe you forever.. now please.. just come home with me!” Birkoff pleaded back.

“Birkoff.. this is more than just about Nikita being pregnant. I have to know who I am before I can be with you!” Melissa cried out and pushed the door.

“Now.. please.. I will call you.” Melissa yelled through the door.

Birkoff sipped at the beer and looked around the room. It was a nice crowd, most of the people where his age. This could be a nice place to bring Melissa if she ever talks to him again.

Birkoff moved his way around until he bumped into a tall girl. He looked up at the dark brown hair and smiled.

“Sorry!” Birkoff called out and he was met with a pleasant smile.

“Hey.. it’s a club.. we dance here… Expect to get bumped.” The girl smiled back and purposely bumped her hips into Birkoff’s.

“My name is Birkoff.” Birkoff says and the girl smiles.

“Lori.” Lori responds and they start to dance together.

“I love this group… they are Rhea’s Obsession.” Lori said knowledgeably and Birkoff smiled.

“Oh.. they are different.” Birkoff says and Lori laughs.

“You don’t get out often, do you?” Lori asks and Birkoff smiles and blushes. The blush is even noticed in the dark lights of the club.

“Nope. I have been… attached.” Birkoff says and Lori smiles.

“Oh no! I’m a rebound girl!” Lori laughs and Birkoff laughs with her. He never said that he wasn’t attached now. He looked at Lori and smile. Well.. maybe for a while he could. Melissa wasn’t talking to him either way, what if she never talked to him again.

“Naw… just a woman named Lori to me!” Birkoff says and they continue to dance and drink.

**************

Birkoff opened the door to the diner and led Lori into the warmth. Birkoff looked around and headed towards the booth. Lori smiled and sat across from him.

“Do you want something to eat, or is this just for coffee?” Birkoff asks as he grabs the menus from the waitress.

“Mmm.. do they serve breakfast now?” Lori asks and Birkoff looks to the waitress and she nods and Lori smiles.

“I could use some French toast if you have some.” Lori says and Birkoff smiles.

“Two French toast platters.” Birkoff says and hands the menus back.

“And plenty of milk.” Lori says and Birkoff smiles at her.

“Into calcium I see.” Birkoff says and Lori smiles and nods her head.

“I have this next door neighbor who just needs to be drenched in milk… ALL THE TIME!” Lori laughs and Birkoff smiles broadly.

“You are a bit naughty.” Birkoff comments and Lori smiles broadly and starts to laugh.

“You make me.” Lori says and Birkoff reaches out and touches Lori’s hands. Lori swallows and looks at Birkoff.

“I want to know more about you.” Birkoff says and Lori stares into his eyes.

“I feel that there is more to you, Birkoff.” Lori says and Birkoff smiles.

“Nah.. I like Oreos and Twizzlers. That’s all you need to know.” Birkoff says and Lori smile and laughs broadly.

“Don’t mind me.. but my mind start to go to the gutter after a few beers.” Lori says and Birkoff laughs broadly.

“Oh… so instead of a mean drunk.. or a sad drunk…” Birkoff says slowly and Lori smiles.

“Yes…. I am a… mmm.. how to say this nicely… a sexually aroused drunk.” Lori says and Birkoff laughs broadly. He hated to admit it himself.. but he was too.

The waitress places the French toast platters down in front of them and Lori drenches her plate with the syrup and Birkoff stares at her as she licks off her fingers.

Birkoff shifts in his seat and looks at Lori. He was attracted to her.. why he wasn’t quite sure. Probably because she wasn’t Melissa.

“So you are one too.” Lori comments and Birkoff blinks and looks at Lori.

“One of what?” Birkoff asks and Lori smiles.

“My kind of drunk.” Lori says and Birkoff smiles.

“I am.. but.. not tonight…” Birkoff said and Lori smiled.

“Wow.. I met a descent guy!” Lori says and Birkoff smiles.

“Do you go to the club often?” Birkoff asks.

*

Birkoff walked into the club and looked around. It was empty, but for the waitress, the bartender, the DJ, and Lori. Birkoff blinked his eyes and looked at Lori.

“Who are you?” Birkoff asks and Lori smiles and walks to Birkoff.

“Someone interested very much in you.” Lori said with a smile and Birkoff started to sweat. This was too much.

“Lori….. I don’t know what to say…” Birkoff says and Lori hands Birkoff a beer.

“How about a dance?” Lori asks and Birkoff looks around and shakes his head.

“Lori.. I am engaged.” Birkoff says and Lori smiles and touches his face.

“I don’t care.” Lori says and Birkoff steps back.

“What? I have a woman I care for very much!” Birkoff says and Lori smiles and looks to the floor.

“You aren’t with her now. Are you?” Lori asks and Birkoff swallows. He remembered clearly the last time he was physically with Melissa. And since that day, he hadn’t talked much to her.

“No.” Birkoff admits and Lori smiles.

“Then what is the problem?” Lori asks she bumps her hips into Birkoff’s. Birkoff takes a sip of the beer and looks at Lori. He wasn’t sure who he was dancing with, but he wanted to stay.

“I guess… well.. nothing.” Birkoff said and Lori smiled broadly and leaned her body into Birkoff’s.

“How could you afford this?” Birkoff asks and Lori winks.

“I inherited the money.” Lori says and Birkoff takes hold of Lori’s hips. They sway back and forth as the music seems to get louder and louder.

Birkoff smiles and holds onto Lori. He was having fun. Maybe this engaged thing wasn’t the way to go.

*

Birkoff rolls over and rubs his face. He looks around and sees the spinning lights above him and rubs his eyes. He feels the cold floor underneath him and the warm body next to him.

“Damn!” Birkoff swears as a man stands over top of them.

“We need to close up.” The man says and turns away. Birkoff looks around as Lori sits up.

“How about I see you in two weeks?” Lori asks as she pulls at the sheet and quickly runs to the lady’s room. Birkoff stares at her and blinks his eyes.

He didn’t have to come back in two weeks.

*

Lori walked with her dog, on a leash that Nikita had sent over. It seemed as if Spice still did not like Michael. Lori turned the corner and waved at the blonde on the stairs.

“NIKITA!” Lori called out and the lady looked up and stared at her. Lori moved towards her and stopped.

“Oh.. I thought you were Nikita. You look like her.” Lori said and she received a smile.

“I am Melissa. Nikita’s half sister.” Melissa says as she extends her hand. If she was a friend of Nikita’s, she was going to be nice to her.

“I am sorry. You look a lot like her. You aren’t pregnant too, are you?” Lori asks and Melissa laughs.

“Oh.. only Nikita is pregnant.” Melissa says. She swallows and thinks of the mess that would be if she was pregnant.

“My dog doesn’t like Michael.. she sent me the leash.” Lori says and Melissa laughs.

“Would you care for some coffee?” Melissa asks and Lori nods her head and walks into the house.

*

“Remember.. in two weeks.” Lori had told Birkoff and the statement haunted him. He looked around and watched Michael and Nikita stumble in from a mission. He didn’t know what to do, but he was sure that Nikita would overreact. He couldn’t go to either of them. He was stuck.

*

“Contact has been made.” Lori says to the computer.

“Birkoff is a good way in. We will go slowly. Have you made any friends?” a womanly voice asks and Lori smiles.

“Yes. In fact, three.. and two of them are sisters.” Lori says and there is a laugh.

“I am glad. Use this time that you aren’t actively with Birkoff to make your own life. You are going to need it afterwards.” The woman’s voice says and Lori nods her head.

“I like where I am. I think I could stay here forever.” Lori said happily and she smiled slowly. If she didn’t have to be with Birkoff, she was sure her life would be perfect. Yet, it was only for one night every two weeks.

“Good. Continue this plan for another four months. Contact me then.” The woman’s voice says and the computer connection dies.

*

“Something is different with Birkoff.” Nikita remarks as she walks out of the office. Michael wraps his arm around Nikita’s waist and kisses her ear.

“I think he misses Melissa, but both of them are stubborn like you and won’t tell each other what they feel.” Michael says and Nikita laughs.

“I guess you are right.” Nikita says and Michael starts to lead Nikita away.

“Let’s hope Lori has put that leash on that dog!” Michael says and Nikita wraps her own arm around Michael and they leave quickly.
