The IMF mission pits them against a mainland Chinese official who has stolen one of China's nuclear triggers. The mission has all the flair and creativity for which the IMF is noted, but they hit a snag when Nikita is unexpectedly taken by Freedom League. Alive in Five by Cynaera

Following the Adrian affair, Operations and Madeline kept Michael and Nikita apart by increasing their mission frequency, and never assigning them to the same team. As a result of their unforgiving schedules, both Michael and Nikita have reached a state of exhaustion. Nikita has about reached the end of her physical and emotional ropes when Madeline informs her that she's off probationary status.

Unsure of this turn of events, Nikita asks why, to which Madeline replies that it is because they have realized that both operatives are approaching burn-out. They have therefore decided to allow Michael and Nikita to have a relationship, but one which must remain out of the public eye, and must not effect their performance on missions. Suspicious of Madeline's motivation, and following a hunch, Nikita has Birkoff get her Madeline's file, where she finds she was correct. Finally, after five grueling months, Michael and Nikita are finally reunited at her apartment. (Reviewed by Lorelei)

A mission against a terrorist named Fitzpatrick goes horribly wrong in Athens, resulting in a large number of Section One casualties. Frustrated by the number of deaths which could have been prevented, Dr. Brian Wicker determines that in order to prevent this from happening again, a medical team needs to accompany the mission teams. Much to Michael's dismay, Operations agrees with Brian's evaluation.

Michael and Ann, a level two operative, do their best to give Brian some field training before he's sent out with them as an experiment on the next mission against Fitzpatrick. When the follow-up mission also goes sour, Ann and Brian are taken captive. Michael goes into mandatory refusal, calling on Nikita's team to join what's left of his own to help get Ann and Brian out. The plan is to have a Section team handle the situation, but Shalatnikov moves up his schedule. Left with no alternative Michael, Catherine and Birkoff have to handle the mission themselves.
