PREMISE: What if Nikita had never been recruited to Section?

Michael stared down the barrel of René's gun, praying for a miracle. His old friend's angry voice penetrated the fog of his pain.

"I said, defend yourself!"

A weapon was kicked in his direction. Muscles froze. Breathing all but stopped. Clarity surfaced.

At last... a way out of Section with honor...

"You once said a person defines themselves by what they are willing to die for. I will die for a belief, and you will die because you have none."

Michael's eyes closed against the truth ringing in his ears.

Dear God, give me courage...

He stood motionless as the bullet shattered his forehead, then crumbled slowly to the floor.
