They lie together in the dark. They touch, and it ignites a spark, But that one moment fades away As sunlight ushers in the day. They rise, refreshed, but tentative, Aware their roles as operatives May mean death if they should fail; National security if they prevail. Crisp, orange leaves of Autumn fall, But o’er the earth there hangs a pall, An ominous sign of things to come Before this dismal day is done. A last long look into warm dear eyes, A tender touch...no voiced good-byes. These moments cannot soon return, A lesson that the two have learned. Their feelings now are in disguise (Which never comes as a surprise.) They are resigned. They play the game. They know things never stay the same. Only pure love in every phase Continues on these dangerous days. When life is tenuous at best, They know their love will still persist.
