It was not because he didn't know what he
      was saying then.
      It was not because the drugs were
      still rambling round in him.
      It was not because he held her
      in his arms again that day.
      It was because of something
      that he simply had to say.

      The urge was there, the words came out,
      control was not enforce.
      They rose up from his heart
      and he told the truth---of course.
      Whatever reasons one could give
      for those pure words he spoke,
      It doesn't matter now at all,
      They cannot be revoked.

      All those years of abstinence
      of strict denial too,
      Were wiped away with just that line,
      the meaning ringing true.
      Some doubted that he really cared.
      His methods made us pause,
      But in the end we finally know
      'cause what was not---was!
