Following the Adrian affair, Operations and Madeline kept Michael and Nikita apart by increasing their mission frequency, and never assigning them to the same team. As a result of their unforgiving schedules, both Michael and Nikita have reached a state of exhaustion. Nikita has about reached the end of her physical and emotional ropes when Madeline informs her that she's off probationary status.
Unsure of this turn of events, Nikita asks why, to which Madeline replies that it is because they have realized that both operatives are approaching burn-out. They have therefore decided to allow Michael and Nikita to have a relationship, but one which must remain out of the public eye, and must not effect their performance on missions. Suspicious of Madeline's motivation, and following a hunch, Nikita has Birkoff get her Madeline's file, where she finds she was correct.
